Choosing what to study when you leave school is a big decision. Study can cost a lot of money and it’s easy to get confused by all the different choices of qualifications out there. How do you know that your qualification is the right one, the best one or even one at all? Career Service’s website has information and advice on tertiary education – it’s called ‘Take off to Tertiary’ and it can help you work through all your options. It’s a good idea to think about what you want to do as a job or career and then pick the qualification that matches.

As well as ‘finding your thing’ you’ll find out what you need to do to make it happen and come up with your own personal career plan.

Work out the right qualification.

When you know what you want to be the next step is working out how to get there. Talk to people who do the job you’re interested in. They can tell you what it’s really like and what qualifications you need.

The KiwiCareers website has information and profiles on more than 650 different jobs and the subjects and qualifications employers want. It’s a great place to start to make a list of the qualifications you’re interested in or work out what subjects to take at school. You can find out more about the qualifications so you can compare them and even link through to the websites of the universities, polytechnics and private organisations that offer them.

Not all qualifications are the same. Make sure a reputable institution runs the course and the qualification you’ll end up with will be recognised by employers. You can check a qualification out at the KiwiQuals website. It’ll tell you who your qualification has been approved by and if it is delivered by an accredited education or training organisation.
