Why? Because to get a good job you’ll need to think about what you’ll do when you leave. Training for a skilled job or getting stuck into tertiary study can make it easier to find the job you want. If you leave school with no qualifications or work experience getting a job straight out of school is hard!
If you’re thinking about leaving school then it’s time to create your exit plan. That way you can decide what you’ll do next before you find yourself doing nothing.
Think about what you’re good at, what you like to do and what actions you can take to get into study, training or a job when you leave. Talk to your teachers, your school careers counsellor or your transitions co-ordinator. They can help you work it out and move into something new.
You need to know all your options and then decide what to do. If you live in Kawakawa, Kaitaia, Whangarei, Waitakere, Manukau, Hamilton, Rotorua, Gisborne, New Plymouth, Porirua, Hutt City or Upper Hutt you can get free information, help and advice from your local Youth Transition Services. They can help you make your plan to get into a job, study or training when you leave school.
You can also talk to Career Services. Their advice is free and there are lots of ways to get it. The KiwiCareers website has heaps of information on more than 650 different jobs and careers as well as what courses and qualifications you need to get the job you want.

Heard about Gateway? It’s a great way to learn new skills and get real life work experience before you leave school. If you’re a student in Year 11, 12 or 13 and your school is part of the Gateway programme, you might be able to get a job doing something you’re interested in while you’re still at school.
What about trying a STAR course and giving tertiary study a go before jumping in full-time? You’ll learn something new and also get credits towards a qualification while you’re still at school. You can find out more about STAR courses and Gateway by talking to your teacher, school careers advisor or your school’s STAR co-ordinator.
There are more than 20,000 different jobs to choose from and no such thing as the perfect job. Take the pressure off your career decisions.
